I began working with clay in college and found it a wonderful medium through which I could express my creativity. When I became a mother, I realized motherhood was the most rewarding experience I could ever have. I decided that raising my children would always come before playing with clay. Now, my children are grown and I again have time to create with clay. Welcome to my second stage!
When I first returned to the studio, I made lots of bowls. They were useful, people wanted them, and they were easy. But I wanted to grow as an artist, try new ideas and learn from others. So I began to experiment with new forms and decorative techniques. I created story pieces that reflected emotions I was experiencing. As I allowed myself to experiment with my work, my creativity blossomed and I grew more confident with this creativity and my artistic vision.
I love to use texture when finishing my pots, whether created through the glazing process, through carving or imprinting designs, or by adding clay. I love making pieces with an organic flow, sometimes incorporating the rough edges or tears in the clay. These pieces can have a very rugged, almost brutal , impact. Yet I also love the very precise look and crisp lines of taped designs that highlight the contrast between glazed and unglazed surfaces.
