The skyline of a city circles the rim of this raku vase.  Look closely at the photos. Do they seem to show two different pots with two different glazes? Yet, it is the same pot with only one glaze. This is the magic that can happen in a raku kiln.On the turquoise side, the glaze has oxidized with plenty of flashings of copper towards the bottom,.  On the opposite side, the kiln created a mini environment that was oxygen deprived, called reduction firing, resulting in colors that run from green to yellow, to aged copper.

Maybe this somehow represents life--sometimes we don't think about breathing. The oxygen is just there. At other times, breathing is harder,  we struggle and move through difficult periods in life.  The pattern of the colors, moving from bright copper to turquoise, green, and yellow was created by the flames of the firing. One might call it  preserved fire. The patterns of the colors make this piece truly unique--you can never recreate the environment that was in the kiln when this was fired.  You could never create another vase that will look like this. NEVER EVER.
